Can an identity system bridge cultural gaps in order to successfully communicate ideas and change behaviors?
Branding From Within explores my interest in how cultural identity relates to visual identity, and focuses on how to create identity when culture, community, and social issues are at stake. It examines creating an identity for Brixton Village, a specific part of the markets in Brixton, London, UK and how to stay true to the location's personality while also creating business success within the market.

Just as Brixton Villages personality is not about the physical buildings, a visual identity for Brixton Village could never be about a logo, color, typeface, or any one graphic element. This identity is about letting the Village be itself, providing a system and structure that works for the existing network of people and ideas within the Village. Its goal is to encourage participation within Brixton Village, and also provide ways for the market to drive business and stay sustainable as a commercial space. The materials presented are reliant upon the community members participation and enthusiasm about Brixton Village, but with that enthusiasm can only come successful business growth.

This project stemmed from my personal interest in cookery and how I could use graphic design to change perception of the activity of cooking. I chose curry recipes because I was interested in how a seemingly standard dish had so many varieties from different parts of the world. I deconstructed the recipes and thought about how they could be portrayed visually to better represent the dish. After this project, I discovered that I now think about recipes very differently when I am cooking, and it has become much more of a visual process, rather than just reading instructions on a page.

This was a personal project, created for my father who has been home-brewing beer for over ten years. He was brewing a German lager and this packaging was created specifically for that beer.
Our family has long German heritage and I wanted to reflect that as well as my father’s sense of humor in the naming and visual identity. “Schnickelfritz” is an affectionate German name for a mischievous or overly talkative child, something my brothers and I were constantly called when we were small. It fits our family traditions and my father’s nature perfectly.

Entertainment Cruises is a portfolio of six unique dining cruise experiences located in eight cities across the United States. When the company realigned it’s products, I created this new visual identity for the parent company. The identity for Entertainment Cruises was created only for use when the audience is large, predominately corporate groups. This sector accounts for approximately 70% of the company’s business. The identity needed to be simple yet flexible and encourage portfolio selling of all of the individual brands.

Entourage is a restaurant with significant private event space located outside of Chicago. After a major refurbishment, the identity needed to be updated to match the new interiors and atmosphere of the restaurant. Campaign materials focused on promoting the large event spaces.
While the interiors are quite modern, they have a slight art deco flair, and I wanted to reflect that in the identity. Inspiration for the look came from a room divider screen from a Frank Lloyd Wright home. The diagonal pattern and colors are flexible and can adjust to fit the media size and applications.
